Prism on the Pan
About the image
It was a rather cold and rainy morning with a fellow birder and friend of mine in the sugarcane fields of Sappi Stanger, specifically those surrounding the Mill, in search of Square-tailed Nightjars. We successfully found our nightjars and moved down towards the settlement ponds near the mill, despite the persistent rain. We found all the usual waterfowl suspects, as the wet doesn't bother them, but they all looked rather sad, understandably so. The rain eventually decided to ease up, and we decided to ditch the car and go for a walk, and thank goodness we did just that, as moments later the clouds opened up, allowing the sun to glimmer through and ultimately forming a rainbow. The scene itself was picturesque, and when I spotted these ducks all huddled up, I could already see the image coming to life, so I knelt in the wet grass and snapped the shot

About the photographer
I am from Durban, KZN and currently studying Nature Management in Centurion. From a young age, I was always exposed to the outdoors and nature, spending almost every holiday in the Berg or the bush and occasionally the sea. My parents always took our trusty old Canon with us wherever we went. I eventually picked it up and fell in love with capturing moments. Ever since then I have been teaching myself everything there is to know about cameras and photography. I absolutely love photographing everything from sports to events to wildlife; my favourite being birds, despite them never sitting still. There is something so satisfying to me about getting a good image and seeing the joy it brings other people.
PHOTOGRAPHER'S QUOTE
Nature has always been my safe space - somewhere I can go to escape reality, slow down and just be present. My wildlife photos hopefully bring a little of this magic to the viewer…
CONSERVATION MESSAGE
We so often get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life that, more often than not, we end up forgetting to appreciate the beauty that nature holds. This image and story show that if you just slow things down and take a breath, amazing things can happen. Nature is a spectacular thing and needs to be protected.
