About the image
A group of rhinos were walking alongside the road, so we decided to sit with them and enjoy the moment for as long as they allowed us to. Some were dehorned while others still had their horns, and this particular rhino caught my attention because of how calm and unbothered it was. At one point, the group started walking directly towards our car, and we began wondering if one of them was about to give us a very expensive scratch! With no other cars around, we had the road completely to ourselves. Eventually, after what seemed like a serious feeding session, they slowly meandered off. There was quite a bit of foliage between us and the rhino, so I honestly didn’t expect the image to come out this clear. That surprise, combined with how peaceful the moment was, makes this a day I’ll definitely remember.

About the photographer
My photography journey started when I “borrowed” my mom’s camera and, well… never gave it back. What began as a way to escape the hustle of Joburg and spend more time outdoors has grown into a passion, I could have never anticipated. Photography became a creative outlet for me, something I never really thought I was good at. I love that we can all stand in the same place, look at the same animal and somehow see the moment completely differently. For me, being behind the camera is about slowing down, and appreciating that even a “quiet” day in the bush is never truly uneventful. I hope my photos can share a little of that feeling with others and remind people why our wildlife is worth protecting. I’m still experimenting, exploring and don’t even get me started on how long it took me to learn Lightroom! 🤣
PHOTOGRAPHER'S QUOTE
I thought photography would give me somewhere to escape to… instead, it taught me to pay attention to the world I was already living in.
CONSERVATION MESSAGE
I hope we never forget that we are part of nature, not separate from it. The future of wildlife may feel bigger than any one person, but every choice we make becomes part of the world we leave behind!
