A Change of Light
About the image
My original plan that morning was very different. I had calculated where I needed to position myself to photograph a sable bull with the full moon framed between its horns. It was ambitious, and unfortunately neither the animal nor the landscape quite cooperated. Rather than giving up on the morning, I realised that if I moved to the opposite side of the sable, I might be able to use the approaching sunrise to create a silhouette instead. So I let go of the original plan and started working with the opportunity in front of me. The result was this silhouette, and it has since become a photograph I really enjoy. It reminds me to stay adaptable, make the most of the situation in front of me, and not become so focused on one idea that I miss another opportunity entirely.

About the photographer
My passion for wildlife started at a young age through regular visits to Erindi Private Game Reserve in Namibia, and later grew even further when I began working there as a safari field guide. It was during this time that I first picked up wildlife photography, largely as a way to push myself creatively. I have always been a very analytical person, so photography gave me an outlet that felt completely different. Over the years, having had the privilege of spending a great deal of time around wildlife, my approach has become more creative. I now enjoy using natural light and composition to capture wildlife in more creative ways. Wildlife remains my main photographic focus, although I also have a strong passion for astrophotography.
PHOTOGRAPHER'S QUOTE
For me, wildlife photography is about disconnecting in order to reconnect - expecting nothing, appreciating everything, and simply being present in nature.
CONSERVATION MESSAGE
I hope my photography helps people feel a stronger connection to the natural world and reminds them of both its beauty and its fragility. If people care more deeply about what they see, they are far more likely to want to protect it.
