Between Earth and Sky

About the image

We had been watching a few lionesses when I happened to look down the road and saw a giraffe walking slowly towards us, with the sunrise glowing behind him. I pointed him out to the guests, and before long, all of us had turned away from the lions and were watching the giraffe instead. It was one of those moments that felt completely effortless, nothing staged or planned, just a classic Madikwe scene unfolding in front of us. The warm morning light, the empty road and the giraffe approaching made it feel almost surreal. Moments like this are why I love photographing wildlife. They happen so quickly and disappear just as fast. One minute you are watching something incredible, and the next it is gone. For me, photography is a way of holding onto those fleeting moments and remembering exactly how it felt to be there.

About the photographer

My connection with wildlife started long before I picked up a camera. I grew up in Durban, spending much of my childhood in Umdloti and in the bush, where wildlife was simply part of my life. My godfather owned game reserves, and by 15, my first “car” was a game viewer. I later trained as a guide and have spent my career working in some of South Africa’s wildest places, eventually settling in Madikwe. Photography became a natural part of that journey. I wanted to capture the moments that stopped me in my tracks and share the incredible animals and wild spaces I experience every day. I particularly enjoy photographing Africa’s predators, but often it’s the quieter moments that mean the most. For me, being behind the camera is partly about holding onto moments that I know won’t last. Out here, something can happen in a few seconds and then disappear forever. I think there’s something special about being able to freeze those moments in time - not just so I can remember them, but so that someone else can experience a small piece of what I saw, even years later.

PHOTOGRAPHER'S QUOTE

It’s all about creating a life worth remembering.

CONSERVATION MESSAGE

I hope this photograph reminds people how incredibly fortunate we are to still have places where moments like this can happen completely wild and uninterrupted.
Protecting these spaces means protecting not just individual animals, but the feeling of being able to witness nature as it was meant to be.
