Calm in the current
About the image
This photo was taken in the Kruger National Park just after the historic floods on January 2026. We had spent the previous ten days in the park with roads being washed away and camps closing. As our trip was coming to an end we finally got to go to our favorite camp, Lower Sabie for the last two nights. The sabie river was still very high and most of the animals were sticking to the high ground. This grey heron had perched itself on a rock that was only just sticking out the middle of a raging rapid. It was sitting there perfectly still whilst the chaotic water rushed past. It is a special image to me because it captures how chaotic the floods were for the Kruger as we were being moved around between camps and animals had to survive the storm even if it meant braving the water.

About the photographer
My photography journey started when I was around 10 when I picked up the family camera on one of my first trips to Kruger. I got hooked on it after that trip and kept on picking up the camera at sightings. I got my first camera when I was around 12 which was a canon bridge camera. I kept this camera throughout high school where I enjoyed birding and bird photography. Whilst studying I managed to save up money to buy myself my current camera. I have always loved nature and being outdoors so wildlife photography became a way of documenting the things I saw and sharing it with friends and family. It evolved into one of my favorite things to do and I often find ways of escaping the city to find somewhere to take photos. It has led me on some amazing adventures and I’ve seen some truly special things such as new species of spider. My favorite place to visit has been Kruger where I can escape the city and enjoy nature in my own time.
