Shake It Off!
About the image
The afternoon heat was thick inside the hide at Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens, but the patience paid off perfectly. This was my very first session testing out the incredible new lens my dad surprised me with for my birthday. After hours of quiet waiting, this magnificent Giant Kingfisher landed right in front of me, aggressively shaking its feathers and scattering a perfect halo of water droplets into the warm light. I raised the new setup, the focus locked instantly, and I captured a breathtaking moment—a beautiful reminder of why I love the wild, and a birthday gift I will never forget.

About the photographer
I am Henricus Meyer. When I am not behind the lens, you can usually find me on the cricket field , I simply enjoy being outdoors. While my sports schedule can get incredibly hectic, picking up my camera has a unique way of completely switching me off and grounding me. Being behind the lens brings me closer to nature than anything else can. It is hard to fully describe what photography means to me; it is just truly special to witness how the circle of life flows so perfectly in the wild. As a storyteller of the natural world, my absolute favorite subjects to photograph are kingfishers and eagles, capturing the raw grace, precision, and beauty of these magnificent birds. Through this frame I hope to share that profound connection with you.
PHOTOGRAPHER'S QUOTE
The true measure of human civility is not how much concrete we can pour, but how much room we leave for the creatures who were here first
CONSERVATION MESSAGE
