The Bizarre Rattle

About the image

At 02:00, I headed to Zaagkuilsdrift, hoping the floodplain would finally reveal one of its most elusive residents. As dawn approached, I heard her bizarre rattle, a strange, mechanical call that seemed to vibrate right through my chest. I settled in and focused on making sure she knew I was present, but calm and not a threat. With patience, I waited, allowing her to move at her own pace through the vegetation. Eventually, she stepped briefly into the open, giving me only a few precious seconds to capture this image before disappearing again. What makes this photograph so special is everything behind that moment. Years of returning to the floodplain, studying the species and learning to understand the conditions and behaviour that bring them out. The photograph feels less like a trophy and more like a reward for patience, trust and persistence.

About the photographer

Growing up in an outdoorsy family, I developed a love for wildlife and the natural world from a young age. Over the years, this grew into a passion for birding, taking me across Southern Africa and beyond in search of new species and memorable encounters. For me, photography is not simply about getting the perfect image, it is about capturing a moment and telling a story. I have a particular fascination with photographing difficult and elusive species. There is something incredibly rewarding about spending hours studying a bird’s behaviour, learning its habits and patiently waiting for that brief opportunity…and then being rewarded with the perfect shot. Being behind the camera encourages me to slow down, appreciate the small details and experience wildlife on a deeper level. Ultimately, my photographs are a way of sharing those special encounters and the stories behind them with others.

PHOTOGRAPHER'S QUOTE

The best photographs aren’t found, they’re earned through patience, persistence and a willingness to truly understand your subject.

CONSERVATION MESSAGE

The most elusive birds often depend on the most fragile habitats. Protecting our wetlands today ensures that future generations can still experience the remarkable birdlife that makes these places so special. Every patch of natural habitat matters.
