Gentle Beginnings
About the image
This photograph was taken on a trip to Kruger National Park with my new camera kit. I remember feeling disappointed and defeated because my lens did not have image stabilisation, and I struggled to capture the photographs I had hoped for. On the last day, it was wet and rainy as we made our way back through the park. We came across a troop of monkeys with their babies gathered along the wall of a dam next to the road. I decided to gather the courage to try one more time with the lens I had been struggling with. That is when I captured this moment. Little did I know that this photograph would go on to receive a Bronze Medal in Russia and now be showcased in its second exhibition. I’m incredibly grateful I tried just one more time.

About the photographer
Hi I'm Liané, and I’m a young South African photographer from Mpumalanga with a deep love for wildlife and the outdoors. My passion for photography grew from my love of animals and spending time in nature, especially in the Kruger National Park. What started as simply wanting to capture the animals I saw has grown into a way of seeing the world differently. I love photographing wildlife and birds, but especially the little moments that reveal an animal’s personality, a curious look, a playful interaction or a quiet moment of connection. Behind my camera, I feel like I’m able to slow down and truly appreciate creation. For me, photography is about more than getting the perfect image; it’s about telling a story, capturing a feeling and sharing a small piece of the incredible world I get to experience.
PHOTOGRAPHER'S QUOTE
There is beauty in every moment, if you take the time to see it.
CONSERVATION MESSAGE
Wildlife is not just something beautiful to photograph; it is something we have a responsibility to protect. I hope this image reminds people to slow down, appreciate the incredible lives happening around us, and help ensure that future generations can experience these moments in the wild too.
