An Owl, a Mountain, and Me

About the image

This image will forever evoke special memories from one of my most memorable bird sightings. The Cape Eagle-Owl is a highly sought-after species in Southern Africa, with cryptic camouflage and inhabiting rugged mountainous terrain. Sitting alone within meters of this bird in its natural habitat is a feeling that I will never be able to describe.

About the photographer

My wildlife photography journey started with a few clicks here and there with my grandmother's small Sony point and shoot camera during our annual Kruger holiday. It was only after my grandmother passed away that I learnt my grandfather had a Canon 400D and a Sigma 400mm lens that was now just sitting in a cupboard. I spent hours looking through pictures they had printed from their Kruger trips. I decided one Kruger trip that I would take the camera and give it a go, and I vividly remember standing outside our hut at Pretoriuskop Rest Camp and photographing a Crested Barbet. It is hard to explain and I am not sure if it was simply the quality and sharpness of the images, but from that moment I was completely hooked and I have never looked back. Wildlife photography for me is a way to document the beauty of nature around me and to share that beauty with others, as well as to promote the conservation of wildlife and their diverse habitats. I love the rare opportunities I get to photograph leopards, but birds are by far my favorite subjects to photograph.

PHOTOGRAPHER'S QUOTE

Wildlife photography is a means to capture, document and showcase the beauty of something much bigger than oneself.

CONSERVATION MESSAGE

If you have the means, purchase land! But ultimately all of us have a part to play in conservation, and every small action or choice makes a difference. If we all just think that someone else will do it or our small choices don't matter, then nothing will ever changed.
