Spread your Wings
About the image
We were staying in the Wilderness National Park and it was the first holiday I was on with my first ever 'proper' camera. I walked around the campsite taking pictures of absolutely everything when my parents and I discovered a nest with two subadult eagle owls and their mom. Every day I would return to the nest and sit in the grass for hours just observing the owls and taking pictures of them. The little owls were adorable- stretching their wings and practicing taking off. Them practicing their flying provided me with some wonderful practice of taking action pictures of birds. This image is so special to me not only because it was my first holiday with my camera but also because of how special and fun it was to watch the owls play every day.

About the photographer
I've grown up going to all the National Parks in South Africa with my parents who are avid nature lovers. I've had a camera in my hand since I was a baby and adored everything to do with nature. Since I can remember I've wanted to work in conservation- taking pictures and videos, documenting animals and share it with people. I love photography because it's a way to capture the beauty and the wonders around us and to share it with other people. Once people see the beauty of nature, they can appreciate it, love it and then protect it. Photography is a powerful tool we can use to make people care for the animals, trees and critters around them that don't have a voice to stand up for themselves. Being behind the camera allows me to capture the art of nature, to create images that evoke a powerful emotion and to share the wonders of the world with the hope that once people can relate to these creatures, they care for them and will protect them.
PHOTOGRAPHER'S QUOTE
Have courage to do the abnormal, it might just change the world.
CONSERVATION MESSAGE
Protecting our natural world is not easy. There are many obstacles you will face and it's a very scary path to go down. But if we are brave, like owlets spreading their wings and flying for the first time, we can make a big difference and change the world for the better.
