A Little Snack

About the image

Following the direction of lion roars we had heard during the night, my family and I set off early in the morning from Letaba. Not even 10 minutes in, we encountered this beautiful lioness walking towards us. We followed her movement and after we repositioned our car to track her path, she suddenly paused, as though stalking her prey, and bolted across the road in front of our car. Terrified squeals of warthogs pierced the air as an unfortunate, panicked baby ran into the road, a fatal mistake as it could not outrun the strong lioness. She caught it, rolled over as a result of the momentum, and sat up, staring at us directly for a few seconds before disappearing with her trophy into the thick bush. This photo is meaningful to me as it captures the unpredictable, fast-changing nature of the wild while also highlighting its raw, intimate beauty.

About the photographer

To put it simply, whenever I am away from the bush, I am thinking about it. The wilderness holds an unbelievably special place in my heart and I do not think I could ever lose my passion for it. I have been incredibly privileged to travel across Southern Africa to many different reserves both as a child and now as a young adult. My passion for nature, the outdoors and photography has therefore been nurtured since I was a young child. I love the thrill of going into a reserve and not knowing what lies around the next bend. Even if nothing spectacular happens, being in the bush is peaceful, interesting and beautiful. When I am behind the camera, I want to portray the wild in moments that represent the unexpected, yet breathtaking, wilderness. Whether it be predators, birds, antelope or the smaller creatures, I love it all. :)

PHOTOGRAPHER'S QUOTE

If I am not in the bush, then I am thinking about it - the thrill, excitement and wild beauty.

CONSERVATION MESSAGE

To me, this photo proves that nature’s harshness is an essential part of its perfect balance. To protect this harmony, we must fiercely safeguard our ecosystems and allow wildlife to thrive on its own terms.
